Why Does The Generation Gap Exist?

The existence of earth has been for over 4.5 billion years; it is the only known planet that harbours the lives of many organisms such as humans, animals, and plants. Our beautiful planet has gone through many changes whether it is geographical or meteorological, it has continued to evolve over the time period as it’s been subjected to global warming, natural disasters, and deforestation.

Just like that, humans have evolved, adapt, and reconstruct themselves and their societies, sometimes hoping to become a better version of themselves. The ancient history of humans is sectioned into 3 main groups or time periods; the stone age, the bronze age, and the iron age.

During the stone age, humans lived like cave-men and hunted animals using stone tools to feed themselves; the era lasted for almost 2.5 million years; many species of animals extinct when it ended due to the denouement of an ice age. Humans became more developed during the second era as they grew into metals and invented many tools; they also matured in arts and architecture, for example, Textile and the construction of the Egyptian pyramid. Societies and villages began to form better protection from the outsiders, and religions came into practice. In the last period, infrastructure was developed, such as drainage systems and streets, cities became more advanced as each had its own authorities, temples, and proper homes for people. Writing and poetry came into practice.

But these ages had millions of years between them, and neither conflicted with each other. Moreover, I guess these changes were more detectable as they were more or less related to the development and interest like infrastructure and poetry. The gap between generations occurs when there is a difference in religious beliefs, traditions, political perspectives, social views, and education. In the past 20 years, these differences have become more apparent; younger and older people have difficulty communicating and understanding each other. According to the Pew Research Canter, 79% of Americans believe there is a major gap between the younger and adults of opinions and views about the world.

For example, technology is a major dispute between both generations; younger people are more into technology and have little time for their families and love ones, whereas earlier people are not interested in it and do not understand that many people’s jobs depend on it. Both are grown up in different backgrounds and cultures, so both have different views and opinions which forms a barrier between them.

Both generations want each other to be like them; the elders complain about the distant behaviour of the younger while youngsters ignore and brush off their concerns that creates a wrong impression for both parties. The young generation feels isolated and stressed in this competitive world. They often use unhealthy substances that help them relieve such feelings like drinking that affect their attitude towards others and cause them to live in a nutshell. Whereas older generation had lived through hard and desperate times, they had seen wars, recessions, and financial issues; they have worked hard for their children’s happiness and cannot see them in a poor situation, but they do not know how to convey their feelings and concerns; as a result, it often comes out as criticism which creates a gap between them.

This creates negative impacts, such as family and health problems. Young people are deprived of priceless advice from their elders, families are separating; this causes a long-term effect as the future generation suffers from strained relations and lack of family bonding.

In conclusion, both generations need to have more respect and tolerance towards each other’s beliefs and interests; after all, everyone has freedom of opinion and expression. Most of all, effective communication is the key to success because “Words are singularly the most powerful force available to humanity. We can choose to use this force constructively with words of encouragement, or destructively using words of despair. Words have energy and power with the ability to help, to heal, to hinder, to hurt, to harm, to humiliate and to humble”.
